Justhands-on.tv Newsletter - October 2009

The UK’s first on-line tv website for patchwork, quilting, and mixed media textiles, including embroidery

I can’t believe that we are already 4 months old and the nights are drawing in too; but this means you have even more of the evening to enjoy watching the films and joining in the workshops.

We have instigated some changeds on the site which we hope will make it easier for you to wander round; there is a submenu on both the shopping and the video clips pages that now allow you to navigate straight to the various sections. And the FULL SCREEN really is coming .....it should be up any day now and we will gradually be changing the films over; we hope this will improve your viewing pleasure. –keep an eye on the Blog pages for our progress.

So what have we put up there for you to see: Well this month we have the first part of our visit to the Festival of Quilts back in August – interviews with Phillips Naylor, Gail Lawther, SAQA to name but a few – I think you will agree that it is a great show (and next year’s dates are.... so think about paying a visit in 2010); there is the second part of Jennie’s visit to Stitchfest and her visit to the various stallholders, including Helen Deigham (hence the funny hat); and we have that visit to the Royal School of Needlework at Hampton Court Palace – we do feel extremely privileged to have been allowed in with the cameras, but the classes and the shop are open to everyone – and they have expanded to San Francisco and Tokyo, as well as having some workshops planned in Bristol .

If you enjoy embroidery and can’t get to one of their classes you can always join in with Kelley, who has started a stumpwork embroidery workshop for us – she is working on petals (for daisies or anything else) and her kits are available on the shopping pages; don’t forget that the items on the shopping pages are not readily available in the shops, so make excellent and unusual gifts for your friends/colleagues and our suppliers can post worldwide.

Kim Thittichai’s workshop demonstrates the great product called ‘Hot Spots’ which is completely washable (so brilliant for embellishing t-shirts) and can be combined with glitter – you can never have too much glitter at Christmas!

Still on the Christmas theme, Mandy suggests you make a start with her Advent teddy – Robin – unusual because it is one for the boys, and also she has Ruby – the pyjama case, - as well as three lovely angel dollies – Sophie, Anja and Joy – and she gives lots of great ideas for faces and hair.

We are creating a new Charity Page on which we plan to post details of requests for quilts/other items, such as Quilts for Valour, or A Gift of Quilts for the 2012 Olympics, mention raffle quilts, and the like, so if you have any information you want posted on that, you can do so through the website and the Contact Us button.

Our offer of 4 months for the price of three (£15) will continue until 23rd Nov but then we will be reverting to a monthly subscription of £5 – again managed by Paypal. For those of you who don’t like to use Paypal, we will continue to offer a payment by cheque option. Those of you who subscribed in our first month (July-August) – we are now, in effect, in your free month and at the next changeover, you will be prompted by Paypal to move onto the new monthly scheme. Keep an eye on the Blog pages for any other helpful information.
Jennie continues to have a busy schedule; off to Chilford, Cambs for next weekend (6/7/8 Nov) and then at the Harrogate Knitting & Stitching Show at the end of the month, as well as training for her Marathon (have you seen the video clip?!?) and I’m planning to continue to sort out my sewing room (husband is not too happy that everything is now on the landing!) – maybe I will donate stuff to the Charity Patchwork Bring & Buy after all.
Happy sewing and stitching,
Valerie & Jennie
