Boston Quilting Retreat with Jennie Rayment, Valerie Nesbitt and Angela Madden - May 2018

Dates: 13 May 2018 - 21 May 2018 -8 nights

Prices: from £2,995 per person

A 8 Day sewing retreat with 3 fabulous tutors in Boston, USA!

We've teamed up with our partners at Arena Travel, who have arranged for Valerie Nesbitt, Jennie Rayment and Angela Madden to be with you throughout the trip to offer their expertise and guidance whilst you work on your projects. Spend an incredible week at your 4* hotel with 4 full days of workshops and a programme of evening fun and entertainment, and all in the company of fellow quilters.

Also included is a shop hop trip - giving you the chance to pick the perfect fabrics for your workshops before visiting the New England Quilt Museum, the only institution in the northeast of the USA solely dedicated to the art and craft of quilting, both traditional and contemporary.

Finally, you'll enjoy a guided sightseeing tour of the historic city of Boston where you'll see all the famous sights such as Beacon Hill, Newbury Street, Faneuil Hall Marketplace and much more before heading to the Museum of Fine Arts - home to a stunning textile collection which began when Boston was at the centre of the US textile industry.

Over 3 days, you will have a day of workshops with all 3 experts. You'll be split into 3 groups and based in 3 separate rooms and the tutors will rotate each day, allowing you to spend a day on each of the tutor's quilt projects. On the 4th day of sewing the tutors will move around the 3 rooms throughout the day, allowing you more freedom to sew what you like in a more relaxed way

5_jennie-quilt-boston-2018-sm "Amazing Manipulations with Twiddling and Fiddling" with Jennie Rayment

In the day, you will play with a wide range of tactile and textural designs. Indulge in some origami, discover how to fold, roll, tweak and twitch squares and strips into delectable formations ideally suitable for quilts, cushions and bags. It’s fun and frolic with fabric and fabulous nifty notions, hints, tips and easy peasy ways to create amazing masterpieces on the machine. You will be in the caring hands of magical mistress of material!

5_valerie-sml-quilt1-whole Valerie Nesbitt: “Go Crazy”

This is a quick and easy quilt to make with 6 Fat ¼’s and there is no waste. Pretty much all fabric combinations work, including pre-cut layer cakes. And, you don’t have to worry about seam allowance either! Valerie has chosen this because it has been hugely popular with her class as well as on the website. Plus, it’s easy to shop for at the Shop Hop or easy to pack & travel with your own fabric.

"Surprising Silhouettes" with Angela Madden

5_angela-madden-quilt-copy Cutting paper is a fun, fast and brilliant way to ‘discover’ unique designs for quilts. We will add a fabric twist to this traditional Japanese idea, enabling you to create the design of your choice - themed or abstract, big or small, simple or detailed. Easy machine stitching will complete. Everyone gets a different result, and there will be multiple possibilities for assembling your particular design. Angela's technique is ideal for experienced quilters or beginners, confident designers or the ‘artistically terrified’ and guarantees amazing results every time. In fact, the only challenge in the day is deciding which of the many alternatives you like best.

Evening Entertainment

There will be 4 nights of evening entertainment - “Totally Tucked Up” by Jennie Rayment as Jennie takes you on a magical mystical tour of twiddles, fiddles, nips and tucks. Marvel at her amazing masterpieces, giggle at the tales of travel and other trials and tribulations, enjoy a hilarious yet highly educational evening with this intriguingly racy raconteur of strip, show and tell!

Valerie will give a "From shop keeper to YouTube sensation" talk. Valerie will share her journey from running a quilt shop in the shadow of Hampton Court Palace to starting one of the first websites offering online classes and then becoming a YouTube sensation with over 1.1m views across 174 countries. She’ll talk about the trials and tribulations. The disasters. The triumphs. And some very entertaining stories in between.

Angela will give a “Poetry about Quilting…and life in general” talk. Instead of doing sensible things like crosswords and Sudoku to fend off Alzheimer’s, Angela writes ‘poetry’ which she will share with us. These poems are about the world of Quilting and life in general, things that strike her or annoy her. Angela describes her poetry as “more McGonagall than Wordsworth!” We describe it as wonderfully entertaining.

On the 4th night Jennie, Valerie and Angela will host a Farewell Dinner at the hotel followed by a "Show and Tell". Celebrate your four days of sewing delight and show all that has been created. Share the highs of your Boston experience and display your creations among friends. We will all enjoy, be amazed and be overwhelmed at your accomplishments. It will be an evening to remember and recall for many years.
