Personalise your weekend with Angela Madden

5_dsc08926-1000 Angela is an internationally recognised quilter, teacher and author and this weekend she will help you unlock creativity you never knew you had. On the first day you’ll choose one of Angela’s ‘Your Choice’ patterns to work with (below). These very clever and versatile patterns allow you to make endless design choices easily. Once you have fused the designs into place, the stitching is simple too.

5_angela-madden-patterns

In the ‘Surprising Silhouettes’ workshop the next day (top), you’ll learn how to cut out and make your own patterns. Cutting paper is a fun, fast and brilliant way to create unique designs for quilts. We will add a fabric twist to this traditional Japanese idea, enabling you to create the design of your choice.

Enjoy a Scrappy Weekend with Carolyn Forster

5_dsc05198-1000

Carolyn is also an accomplished quilt maker teacher and author and has two fantastic scrappy quilts planned for you over the weekend so you can delve into your jelly rolls and raid your stash. The ‘Woven Rail’ quilt (above) is a very modern quilt pattern and Carolyn has designed it so that it’s very jelly roll friendly.

5_carolyn-quilt-1000

‘Japanese Stars And Lanterns’ quilt (above) creates a simple block that transforms itself into twinkling stars and lanterns, while also using up your scrap strips and strings, or any stash you want. This patchwork can be worked by hand or by machine and is great for beginners too, since there is no accurate seam allowance needed.

A stitching weekend from only £425 per person

You will learn about many different variations of running stitches, and how to stitch into and make up pages for your journal. You’ll also be using ink tense blocks and pencils to colour pages and wooden printing blocks. 5_sm-gail Gail Penberthy loves to design and teach.

5_new-phototastic-collage-gail-4 On the first day of the retreat she’ll be teaching you to make a table topper, a most unusual design that is intended as a table centre (and in the right fabrics can become a Christmas tree skirt.) It’s not expected to be fully completed in the day workshop but you can take it home to finish or finish it off with a little late night sewing on the weekend. Who knows!

For the second day you can choose one of Gail’s own delightful folded felt patterns to work on.

Beautiful Birds with Gail Lawther

5_gail-sm Gail is known for designing and stitching quilts for books and patterns, as well as teaching workshops across the UK and further afield. Treat yourself to a weekend doing the craft you love along with like-minded people – and try out some new techniques into the bargain.

Birds provide the soundtrack to our lives, and all the projects that Gail is offering on this retreat are inspired by our feathered friends: you'll find garden birds and seabirds, pheasants and flamingos, doves and chickens, herons and puffins – and loads more besides.

Whether you're a complete beginner to patchwork or an accomplished stitcher, this is an excellent weekend for extending your skills and learning new ones. There's a wide variety of different techniques on offer for creating the projects, including – of course– Gail’s ‘signature’ Stained Glass Patchwork.

Layer, Solder and Stitch with Kathleen Laurel Sage

5_kls-small

Kathleen is known for wielding her soldering iron to embellish; remove and seal areas of her machine embroidered and layered organza designs, to make a strong delicate and versatile fabric.

Kathleen will guide you through the techniques needed to create your own layered, soldered and stitched project, including some simple steps to design your own masterpiece. She will help you decide on a design, either drawn by you or from a selection of patterns and kits. If you have never used a soldering iron before, don’t worry you’ll soon be totally hooked with your head brimming full of fantastic creative ideas.

The weekend will be a good solid starting point for a 3 dimensional or larger project or you may wish to explore the technique in a geometric manner or even make several smaller pieces in the form of unique jewellery or small panels.

Workshops

You’ll split into two groups, in 2 separate rooms, and the tutors will rotate - giving you 3 full workshops with each knitting expert!

Sarah Hatton's Workshops

Tips and tricks for professional finishing: Tips and tricks for professional finishing. Do you dread sewing up? Do you struggle to get a perfect finish? Take your knits from homemade to handmade with Sarah’s expert advice, including easy-to-learn tricks you won’t find in a book.

Understanding lace: Understanding eyelet lace. Madeira is known for its beautiful lacework. In this workshop, Sarah will demonstrate the principles of eyelet lace. You’ll then chart your own lace pattern and knit up a swatch in it. Learn how different shawl shapes are made and discover how to start your own triangular lace shawl.

How to alter a pattern to fit you: If you’ve ever spent a long time knitting something, only to be disappointed by the fit, or to discover it doesn’t suit you, this workshop will fix that forever! Why not bring along a pattern you want to make, or a garment that needs adjusting? Sarah will show you how to make all the changes you need to get a perfect fit.

Rosee Woodland's Workshops

Stranded colourwork: Madeira’s tropical paradise is a visual feast for any knitter. In this workshop you’ll discover how to knit stranded colourwork, sometimes known as Fair Isle - a brilliant but simple way of making your knitting really colourful. You’ll try out two-handed colourwork, learn about colour dominance and discover how to get a perfect finish every time.

Delve deeper into colour: Learning how to combine shades successfully, without worrying about the theory behind it! You’ll work on a design for a simple cushion pattern, using either stripes or incorporating stranded colourwork motifs from your first workshop with Rosee..

Adding Embroidery to your knitting:
Inspired by the beautiful embroidery of Madeira, discover how to embellish your knitting to add that extra personal touch, using duplicate stitch and traditional embroidery techniques. Swatches will be provided for practising on, but why not bring along a handknit that deserves an extra special touch and learn how to transform it in this workshop.

A 7 Day quilting retreat with 2 fabulous tutors in Madeira

We've teamed up with our partners at Arena Travel, who have arranged for Jennie Rayment and Angela Madden to join you on the beautiful island of Madeira. Spend an incredible week at the 4-star Hotel Golden Residence on a bed and breakfast basis with a welcome dinner in the hotel and farewell dinner in a traditional folklore restaurant.

You can expand your quilting skills and enjoy the company of your fellow quilters as you explore the island and capital city of Funchal on two included excursions. An experienced tour manager will be on hand to ensure all goes well and you make the most of your break.

Jennie says "What a wonderful week we will have in Madeira, you will revel in the wealth of fabric fun and fabrications plus enjoy the wonderful scenery of a beautiful island. Weather will be warm, as will the welcome by all. Knowing how good Malta was in 2017 and how much the students enjoyed themselves as did the tutors, Madeira will be an equally marvellous mix of enjoyable entertainment and a true learning experience."

5_new-phototastic-collage-madeira-nov-18

Workshops

During the course of the retreat you will spend equal time with each tutor working on Jennie’s “Amazing Manipulations with Twiddling and Fiddling” and Angela’s “Surprising Silhouettes” quilting projects. Guests will be split into two groups, based in two separate rooms and will change tutors through the week.

5_jennie-quilt-boston-2018-sm "Amazing Manipulations with Twiddling and Fiddling" with Jennie Rayment

In this course you will play with a wide range of tactile and textural designs. Indulge in some origami, discover how to fold, roll, tweak and twitch squares and strips into delectable formations ideally suitable for quilts, cushions and bags. It's fun and frolic with fabric and fabulous nifty notions, hints, tips and easy peasy ways to create amazing masterpieces on the machine. You will be in the caring hands of magical mistress of material.

"Surprising Silhouettes" with Angela Madden

5_angela-madden-quilt-copy Cutting paper is a fun, fast and brilliant way to 'discover' unique designs for quilts. We will add a fabric twist to this traditional Japanese idea, enabling you to create the design of your choice - themed or abstract, big or small, simple or detailed. Easy machine stitching will complete. Everyone gets a different result, and there will be multiple possibilities for assembling your particular design. Angela's technique is ideal for experienced quilters or beginners, confident designers or the 'artistically terrified' and guarantees amazing results every time. In fact, the only challenge is deciding which of the many alternatives you like best.

Evening Entertainment

There will be 4 nights of evening entertainment - “Totally Tucked Up” by Jennie Rayment as Jennie takes you on a magical mystical tour of twiddles, fiddles, nips and tucks. Marvel at her amazing masterpieces, giggle at the tales of travel and other trials and tribulations, enjoy a hilarious yet highly educational evening with this intriguingly racy raconteur of strip, show and tell!

Angela will give a “Poetry about Quilting…and life in general” talk. Instead of doing sensible things like crosswords and Sudoku to fend off Alzheimer’s, Angela writes ‘poetry’ which she will share with us. These poems are about the world of Quilting and life in general, things that strike her or annoy her. Angela describes her poetry as “more McGonagall than Wordsworth!” We describe it as wonderfully entertaining.

On Day 6 Jennie and Angela will host a ‘Show and Tell’ Celebrate your days of sewing delight and show all that has been created. Share your experience and display your creations among friends. We will all enjoy, be amazed and be overwhelmed at your accomplishments

On the last night join Jennie, Angela and your fellow quilters for a farewell dinner in a typical restaurant situated high above Funchal. A local folklore group will ensure your final evening is a very enjoyable one!
