WORKSHOP NOTES

Flying Geese the traditional way:

To make flying geese units that are 4”x2” finished you need to cut

A rectangle for the goose 4 ½”x 2 ½” and two sky squares each 2 ½”

Draw a diagonal line across the back of each of the sky squares.

Take the rectangle, right side up, and place one square to the rh end, right side down, with the drawn line running from the bottom rh corner of the rectangle up to the top.

Sew down the line.

Cut away the excess fabric towards the corner, leaving a ¼ “ seam allowance.

Press square open.

Repeat with the second sky square, on the other end of the rectangle, making sure that the drawn line runs from the botton lh corner up to the top, the fabrics are right sides together, and you will find that this square overlaps the first along the top edge.

Sew along the drawn line

Cut away the excess on the corner, as before leaving ¼” seam allowance

Press square open.

More Traditional sizes for flying geese:

6”x3” finished – you cut 6 ½” x 3 ½” rectangle and two squares at 3 ½”

8” x4” finished – you cut 8 ½” x 4 ½” rectangle and two squares at 4 ½”

Flying Geese Patchwork - great for scrap patchwork and quilt borders

Always useful to know how to create these  flying geese patchwork units working with rectangles and squares - perfect if your starting point are 2 1/2" strips as supplied in jelly rolls and their equivalents.
