Coming up in September on Justhands-on.tv…..

We start the month with a really fascinating visit to The Jane Austen House museum in the south of England where we learn that one of the world’s most beloved authors was also a seamstress of considerable ability and skill using English Paper Piecing and fussy cutting to create a coverlet (something that has no wadding);  as well as hearing about the recent Community Quilt project she inspired.

This month we have a Sampler Quilt series which will be perfect for all those who are new to patchwork, as well as those with some sewing skills;  the basic quilt will have 9 blocks, but there will be more alternatives as the month’s progress to make 15 blocks, and at the end we will cover borders, layering, quilting and binding.  We start with Valerie helping you select the fabrics, and then later in the month move on to the first block, Rail Fence, which covers rotary cutting and seam allowance.

In our throwback Thursday feature, Ruth Issett shows us how to use Markel Paint Sticks, a simple way of adding colour to your quilting,  in a demo we recorded at our visit to the Festival of Quilts a few years ago.

September also brings us a very comprehensive sock workshop from our expert knitter Rosie Woodland who explains the whole process, in perfect detail, from top to toe so to speak (and for any new grandparents out there, the pattern comes in baby size too)

And from our scrap queen, Valerie, we have a really interesting workshop on how to make chenille fabric, which is a great way of using up fabric that you don’t love as much as you think you should,  as well as a simple strips and string quilt – again using up more scraps.

Jennie Rayment is on her usual effervescent form as she explains how to make a Maltese Cross – and we mean sewing not arguing.

And finally this month, Paula Doyle gives us a very useful tip on how to create the perfect mitred corner – it’s so easy when you know how!
