Workshop notes for wrist pincushion:

Written by Valerie Nesitt

You will need 2 pieces of felt, a small piece of elastic, a small piece of cardboard and some stuffing.

Take first piece of felt and draw circle onto it using something convenient and the right size.

Cut elastic to the right length measuring your wrist plus a bit of overlap

Make elastic into a circle; place the overlap piece into the centre of the felt and anchor securely

Prepare front piece of felt with design – either machine stitching ( zig-zag is fine) or embroidery by hand ;

Note: if you are creating a design with handwork make sure you keep it within the design area as it won’t take very kindly to being cut through (see later stage)

Lay the back piece of your pincushion onto the reverse side of the front piece;  trim front to match the back – pinking shears work well;  sew round leaving a gap

Note:  again this sewing round could be done with a blanket stitch.

Through the gap put the magic piece of cardboard which prevents the pins going right through into your flesh!

Stuff well

Close up the gap.

Use with pride!

Jennie shows us how to make this useful little project from a couple of pieces of felt;  she suggests using your sewing machine to create a design on the top,and this could be a great opportunity for you to try out some of those stitches you have always wondered about  and/or threads.

But this could just as easily be worked by hand with simple embroidery stitches - and therefore one for the younger generation too - maybe chain stitch and running stitch.

Valerie still has one she made as a child with chain stitch as the decoration and was much cherished by her mother.

Also a great fundraising idea as it is quick and easy!
