Japanese Jelly Roll Quilt

This is a truly simple quilt – easily made from scraps or co-ordinated fabrics;approx 36” x 40” but it’s very easy to make bigger!

Take 13 strips cut 2 ½” x 44” (the width of the fabric)

Sub-cut each strip into 4 sections – these will measure approx 10 ½” –

TIP: do not pre-cut the selvedge off  as you may need a bit of it!

But if you are using a layer cake, just cut the square into strips 2 ½” wide:  each square will give you 4 strips so you may like to think about this and only cut one or two strips from the fabrics you want to use – therefore leaving you with some for another project or piano keys borders.

Select 4 different pieces and sew them together on the short end to create one long strip

Take another 5 pieces and do the same

Sew strip 2 onto strip 1

N.B. the seams do not match:  the seam of row 2 should be placed half-way up the first strip, which means the top will stick out as does the bottom strip.

Trim Level (if you want you can use these offcuts as extra little pieces but you will then need to re-trim the top and bottom of your project level – won’t matter, as it’s only about ½”)

Repeat these two rows, rotating the fabric selected, until you have used all the pieces (or you reach your desired project width)

NOTE: when sewing row 3 onto row 2 take care to match the seam across to row 1

Then row 4 needs to match across to row 2

Etc ; etc

However: I would then probably start sewing another section so that the quilt top doesn’t get too heavy and pull;  you can then sew the two (or more) sections together.

Press (we really like Best Press as a product which should be available in your local quilt shop!)

There is sufficient fabric to create 12 strips

Add borders: - anything up to 6” wide will work particularly if you are using a feature fabric as we did in the sample.

Add the borders opposite sides first, and then the final two sides;

Remember to measure your quilt across the middle to get an accurate size and you can add cornerstones to ‘stretch’ the fabric if needed.

Layer, quilt and bind!

P.S. easy wavey quilting with the walking foot would look great on this – again you can use the quick search to find the workshop on this.

Jelly Roll Option

Stunning japanese print fabrics makes this a sure winner;  but it would be great in any colour range and design.

or Possible Layer Cake

Valerie used 2 ½” strips that were pre-cut across the width of the fabric, which she then cut down to approx 10" long so you could look at your layer cake and cut that down into 2 ½” strips.

or just Stash Scrappy

Or just raid your stash and make a quilt that is completely scrappy.

The staggered brick look also adds interest and avoids having to match seams (although you do have to pay attention and Valerie guides you though that too).
