Workshop notes for Stretched Churn Dash

This is a simple variation of the traditional 9-patch Churn Dash block made up of a plain centre square, four corner units which are half-square triangles and then four pieces that are strip pieced with 2 colours.

For the stretch version you have the same number of pieces, it’s just the dimensions that change:

For a 9” x 12” finished block you will need to cut the following (i.e. using 3” finished units)

Make Four corner  half-square triangle unit:

cut 2 squares of each colour @ 4”; draw a diagonal line; sew a mean ¼” seam either side of it; cut up the drawn line; press; trim back to an accurate 3 ½”

Cut a strip from each colour  @ 2”; strip piece together with accurate ¼” seam; cut two pieces @ 3 ½” and two pieces @ 6 ½”

Cut Centre rectangle 3 ½” x  6 ½”

Lay out pieces to create the block; sew together in rows as you would normall and then sew rows together to form the block

For a 12” x 16” block – the sizes will be as follows:

Cut squares for half-square triangle units @ 5” and then trim back to 4 ½”

Cut strips for strip-piecing @ 2 ½” – subcut into two units @ 4 ½” and two units @ 8 ½”

Centre rectangle is cut 4 ½” x 8 ½”

Make as many as you feel necessary for a quilt

If you want sashing this can be cut any size you like, but 2 ½” always works well

Cornerstones square  would  then also be cut at 2 ½”

Lay out blocks in rows, add sashing as required

Add borders as required

Valerie has suggested a few options – see which you feel work well for you and your fabric.

In this workshop Valerie has taken the traditional Churn Dash block (which is on a standard 9-patch square grid) and stretched the middle row so that that it becomes rectangles.

Since these sections are strip-pieced they are still quick and easy to make and will be cut from the same strip-pieced section you have created.

As well as a variety of sizes, Valerie has used a variety of border options, too to give you inspiration.

This would also be a really lovely design created with scraps of fabric - maybe a different fabric for each of the Stretched Blocks; it takes surprising little fabric and you if you have matching layer cakes and nickle packs, this would work too.

For the corners of the Church Dash Valerie likes to use the quick triangle method where you cut squares, and then trim back to being a perfect size;   if you would like to see a fuller version of this, Fast & Accurate Half Square Triangles

Valerie also mentions the possibility of a triple rail and 9 patch corners, which is an idea she shared on the Rosebud Fayre Block of the Month programme.
