Workshop notes for Bargello Table Mat

I used 2 ½” strips and in fact chose them from a 10 fabric strip roll (which means a strips of fabric approx 42” )

These were cut back to half that length (approx 21-22”) – so a Fat ¼ length

And from my 10 fabric roll I was able to make 4 tablemats.

Plus border fabric

Select 6

Set them out in a pleasing order (and remember that the last one needs to be happy with the first one i.e. No.1 needs to be happy living against no.6)

Sew together in this sequence with ¼” seam allowance and try and run top to bottom and them bottom to top to even up the drag and keep the cylinder lying flat.

Press (gently) the seams all in one direction

Sew up into a cylinder

Lay cylinder down flat on the board (I like to have the wrong side facing me)

Make the ruler do the work - straighten up one end of your work and then cut the following segments:

4@ 2 ½”

2@ 2”

1@ 1 ½”

1@ 3”

(you can alter these measurements of course but bear in mind that you once you have sewn the strips they will end up ½” smaller in width)

Starting with a 2 ½” strip unpick between two chosen colours

Then following your desired pattern unpick the other segments laying them out in front of you

Once they are all unpicked they need to be sewn together in the usual way, matching seams as you go.

Decide on a border – I selected another piece of fabric and cut the border strips 2 ½” wide

Layer, quilt and bind

(or you could fast turn them and then quilt)

Bargello patchwork

The tablemat was very economical on fabrics - I used 2 ½” strips and in fact chose them from a 10 fabric strip roll

And from my 10 fabric roll I was able to make 4 tablemats.

Obviously you need border fabric, wadding and binding.

Fast Patchwork Table Mat

These tablemats are a great way to practice machine quilting and you also have the option of fast turning; not sure how to do this? - well you can watch our video in the tips section

and if you fancy adding Flat Piping that too can be found in our tips section

and both these tips have been taken from longer videos in the workshops section.

Show & Tell

Jo Webb has shared a lovely quilt with us that she made back in 2000 and it's on the Show & Tell pages so who knows where this little video might lead!
