Workshop Notes

You can work with logs that are cut to any width – we chose 2 ½”

We also chose to work with a centre colour and then 3 light and 3 dark

The number of blocks suggested are:

Cot/Lap quilt – 9 blocks

Single – 15 blocks

Double – 20 blocks

King – 25 or 30 blocks

To which you would add borders.

To make the cushion we took the scraps/leftovers and trimmed them down to1½” and using the same construction method worked on 4 blocks.

Remember whatever size the logs are CUT that is the size you cut the centre/1st light segments.

Fast, accurate and satisfying

I just love this form of construction – it allows me to be fast and accurate and satisfies my need-to-sew and Log Cabin works so well with all sorts of colours – just remember that the colour split is diagonally – light one side and dark the other.

Lots of variations

There is a huge range of possible settings with this standard block – try some and see – they will depend a little on your colour choice.

Looking through a camera lens or a door viewfinder (available from all good diy stores) really helps with the light/dark and tones – particularly good for scrap quilts.

The most common settings seen are the Fields and Furrows (as used in the display quilt) and Barn Raising – which is the large triangle setting.

You can decided which fabric you consider to be light and which dark – indeed the sharp eyed amongst you might notice that the display quilt has the colours reversed – I wanted more of the turquoise than the darker pink.
